Hospital Parking Comes with Real Challenges

A corporate office empties at 6pm. A hospital runs 24 hours, 365 days a year. Staff rotate across different shifts.

The spaces are not the problem. The problem is that static allocation was designed for a 9-to-5 world, and hospitals do not operate in one.

In the UK, a UNISON survey of more than 3,500 health workers found that 54% had been late for work because of parking, with some spending up to an hour searching for a space, and 64% had received parking fines at work (UNISON, 2018). For a hospital running three shifts a day, that lost time compounds at every changeover.

Typical Challenges in Hospital Parking

How the Solution Works

A hospital deployment typically combines physical infrastructure with the ParkingAround platform. Adapted to staff roles and visitor types.

Fleximodo IoT parking sensor mounted flush in the parking surface

IoT Parking Sensors

One sensor per space, flush-mounted in the road surface in 10-15 minutes. No cabling, no trench, no power connection.

Solar-powered Flip-Dot parking guidance display showing free spaces per zone

Parking Guidance Signage

Solar-powered flip-dot displays mounted at zone entry points show live available-space counts for the zone ahead, updated within seconds of a sensor event. No power cabling required. Patient and visitor zones get their own sign loop, independent of staff zones. In covered or underground structures, internal LED guidance panels can be used instead.

ParkingAround – Staff & Visitor Management

The software layer that makes sensor data actionable for three groups at once: clinical staff who book a space, facilities managers who set zone rules and respond to alerts, and visitors navigating to available patient bays. Staff book through the mobile app before leaving home. Dynamic pool logic releases an absent doctor's assigned space to the next person on the shift waitlist. Facilities managers see live occupancy across all zones and get automatic rule-breach alerts.

Fleximodo IoT Permit Card for staff and contractor vehicles

IoT Permit Card (physical)

A BLE/UWB permit card in the vehicle identifies staff, fleet, or contractor cars at the bay. Best for defined groups and drivers who prefer no app.

Bluetooth Digital Permit (in the app)

The same permit lives in the driver's phone. When a vehicle parks over a sensor, a Bluetooth handshake verifies the permit in real-time.

How Shift-Based Parking Actually Works

The core problem in hospital staff parking is that assigned spaces are held by the person, not by the shift. Fleximodo solves this through a shared pool with dynamic release.

Staff register and join a waitlist for their zone

Each staff member is assigned a zone based on role and shift pattern. Consultants, nursing staff, and administrative staff may have separate zone allocations.

Live occupancy data in the dashboard

The assigned doctor books their space through the app. Or does not.

If they book, the space is reserved. If they do not book by a configurable cut-off (e.g. 30 minutes before shift start), the system reads the sensor: is the space occupied? If not, it auto-releases to the next person on the waitlist.

Parking strategy and optimisation

The waitlist staff member gets a notification and can take the space

They arrive, the access system recognises their profile, and they park. No phone call to facilities, no manual override.

Needs analysis and site audit

The sensor confirms occupancy

ParkingAround updates the live map. The facilities manager sees which spaces are occupied, available, or in violation of time limits.

Incoming staff book from 30 minutes before shift start; the outgoing shift's dynamic releases clear automatically.

What Hospital Parking Management Delivers

  • Clinical Staff Start Shifts Without Parking Stress

A nurse arriving for a 06:00 shift knows before leaving home whether a space is confirmed, instead of losing the first ten minutes hunting for a bay.

  • Dynamic Allocation Recovers Wasted Capacity

In a 250-space car park with a 20% daily absence rate, static allocation wastes 50 spaces. Dynamic re-allocation via ParkingAround recovers that capacity.

  • Patients Reach Available Spaces Directly

Guidance signage routes patients to zones with free bays before they enter the car park. Patient zones are managed separately from staff zones.

  • No Rip-and-Replace Integration

ParkingAround integrates with existing access control. Existing Verkada cameras, LenelS2 readers, or equivalents stay in place. The integration is a software layer, not a hardware project.

  • Facilities Teams Manage by Exception

Automatic enforcement alerts flag a violation (non-permitted vehicle, overstay) without manual patrols. The team responds to flagged events instead of hunting for them.

  • Occupancy Data for Capacity Planning and ESG

Historical occupancy by zone, shift, and day supports headcount planning, car-park expansion cases, and Scope 3 staff-commuting reporting.
