Aalen City Council, in Baden-Württemberg, runs its own parking and bought Fleximodo sensors directly, without an integrator in between. The council installed IoT Parking Sensor Standard units in the ground, connected over LoRaWAN, from January 2026.

Why in-ground sensors?
In-ground sensors suit a council that wants permanent infrastructure. The Sensor Standard sits flush with the road surface, so it does not get in the way of street cleaning or winter ploughing and cannot be knocked off.
The housing is rated IP68 against water and dust and IK10 against impact. Detection combines a magnetometer with radar, which is how Fleximodo reaches 99.96% detection accuracy. The sensor also corrects for temperature, so the magnetic reading does not drift between a frozen January morning and hot summer asphalt.
Why LoRaWAN here?
LoRaWAN lets one gateway serve many sensors, and the sensors need no mobile SIM of their own. For a city that already runs, or plans to run, a LoRaWAN network for other services, parking sensors become more devices on the same network.
The choice also shows that German municipal buyers pick the network to match what they have. Ulm, another Baden-Württemberg city, chose NB-IoT for its rollout. Fleximodo supplies the same sensor family for both networks, so the decision is about infrastructure, not about the sensor.
What does the city handle, and what does Fleximodo handle?
The council runs the system. Fleximodo's part covered what a city team needs in the first phase:

- Sensor mapping, linking each sensor to its bay
- Technical support during rollout and operation
