    What Are IoT Parking Sensors?

IoT parking sensors are space-level vehicle detection devices that report whether a parking bay is free or occupied.

    Real-time parking data

Fleximodo sensors turn each parking space into a live digital data point, allowing operators to monitor occupancy, improve parking guidance, support enforcement, and connect real-time parking data to wider parking operations.

    Without heavy wired infrastructure

Fleximodo parking sensors are designed for outdoor and indoor deployments where operators need real-time occupancy visibility without heavy wired infrastructure, constant manual checks, or complex maintenance workflows. Depending on the project, deployments can scale from small pilot sites to citywide parking networks.

    How Fleximodo Parking Sensors Work

    Sensor radio frequency specification

Reliable Parking Detection In Real Time

Fleximodo sensors detect vehicle presence using a combination of 3-axis magnetic field sensing and nano-radar. This two-way sensing approach improves reliability in changing urban conditions and helps the system capture real parking events more consistently than time-based sampling approaches.

    Sensor parking software

    Parking Software

When a vehicle arrives or leaves, the sensor creates an occupancy event and sends it through LoRaWAN or NB-IoT connectivity, depending on the model. The data is then processed in the Fleximodo backend and can be used in dashboards, parking guidance, enforcement workflows, analytics, APIs, and related parking software layers.

    Why Event-Based Detection Matters

    Sensor installation example

    Operational Clarity In Real Time

Many parking systems rely on time-based sampling, which checks slot status only every 30 to 60 seconds. Fleximodo uses event-based detection that captures each arrival and departure with more precise timing, helping operators reduce missed events and improve the quality of data used for enforcement, billing, reporting, and occupancy analytics.

    Sensor data integrity

    Data Integrity in Any Condition

The system is also designed for data consistency during network interruptions. Event data is stored and synchronized after connectivity is restored, which helps preserve operational visibility and prevents data loss in real-world deployments.

    Sensor Families

Fleximodo currently offers two main parking sensor families: Standard and Mini. Together they cover multiple deployment styles, use cases, and physical environments.

    Standard

    Sensor Family

The Standard sensor family is built for demanding outdoor parking environments and city-scale or operator-scale deployments. It supports real-time occupancy detection for curbside parking, open-air car parks, municipal zones, mixed-use sites, and other applications where ruggedness, long-term operation, and flexible connectivity matter most.

    In-Ground vs On-Surface Parking Sensors

    Sensor radio frequency specification

Choosing between in-ground and on-surface parking sensors depends on site design, installation preferences, visibility requirements, and maintenance strategy. In-ground sensors offer a lower-profile deployment style for streets and public spaces, while on-surface sensors can simplify retrofit installation and access in some project types.

    Sensor parking software

Fleximodo supports both approaches through its Standard sensor family, helping parking operators select the right installation method for city streets, corporate sites, residential projects, retail locations, and mixed-use developments.

    NB-IoT vs LoRaWAN Connectivity

Connectivity choice affects deployment model, network strategy, and long-term operating behavior.

Fleximodo supports LoRaWAN across multiple sensor models and NB-IoT across selected Standard models, allowing deployments to align with local infrastructure and project requirements.

For parking operators, the key question is not which protocol is universally better, but which one fits the site, geography, network availability, rollout speed, and operational goals of the project.

    Parking Sensors vs ANPR Cameras

    Sensor radio frequency specification

Solve different parts of the parking management problem

Sensors are designed for space-level occupancy detection, while ANPR focuses on vehicle identification and entry-exit recognition. In many parking environments, the strongest setup is not either-or, but a combined architecture where occupancy data and vehicle identity support guidance, enforcement, and operational workflows together.

    Sensor parking software

    IoT Permit Cards

Fleximodo also supports permit-based identification through IoT Permit Cards, which can pair parking sensors with parker authentication at the parking space level.

    Detection Accuracy & Data Integrity

Detection quality matters because occupancy data is often used beyond simple monitoring.

It can influence parking guidance, enforcement actions, operational reporting, utilization analysis, and customer experience. Fleximodo sensors are designed to capture occupancy changes accurately, assign confidence to detections, and preserve event data through connectivity disruptions.

The system also includes calibration and testing logic that helps sensors learn the magnetic environment of a given space and correctly distinguish between FREE and BUSY states. This strengthens real-world reliability and supports consistent operation across different deployment conditions.

    Built for Parking Operations

Fleximodo IoT parking sensors are not standalone devices in isolation.

They are part of a wider parking ecosystem that can support permit-based parking, parking guidance, software workflows, analytics, remote monitoring, OTA updates, and integrations with operator tools and third-party systems.

This makes the sensor layer useful not only for detecting occupancy, but for enabling real operational outcomes such as reduced cruising, better enforcement readiness, improved utilization visibility, and more scalable parking management.
