Krefeld logistics site: on-surface NB-IoT sensors with permit cards

BLG Industrielogistik, the industrial logistics division of the BLG LOGISTICS group, runs a Fleximodo parking system at its site in Krefeld, North Rhine-Westphalia. Ground sensors show which bays are taken. BLE permit cards carried in authorised vehicles show whether the car in a bay is allowed to be there. This page covers the system for integrators and site engineers.

System architecture

The system has four layers:

  1. Sensor. IoT Parking Sensor Standard, NB-IoT version, fitted with the on-surface adaptor. It combines a magnetometer with radar to detect a vehicle, the setup behind Fleximodo's 99.96% detection accuracy.
  2. Credential. IoT Permit Card (BLE), kept in each authorised vehicle. When a car parks, the system links the occupied bay to the card present, or flags that none is present.
  3. Network. Sensors send data over NB-IoT on Deutsche Telekom's network. No gateways are needed on site.
  4. Platform. Fleximodo's DOTA backend handles sensor monitoring and over-the-air firmware updates. Site staff work in the CityPortal dashboard, and data can leave the platform through the Fleximodo API.

Integration notes

Mounting. The on-surface adaptor fixes the sensor on top of the existing surface. That avoids cutting into yard paving that carries heavy traffic, and a sensor can be moved if the site layout changes.

Mapping comes first. During onboarding each sensor is tied to a bay and each bay to a zone. Permit rules only work once that map is right, so allow time for a walk-through with site staff.

Occupancy plus identity. A sensor alone says "occupied". Adding the permit card lets the platform say "occupied by an authorised vehicle" or "occupied without a permit". This is the basis for parking enforcement on private sites, and for company parking where bays are split between staff, visitors and fleet.

Training. The onboarding package included training and written documentation, so the BLG team can add users, change zones and read reports without calling support.
