CROSS Zlín is a Czech manufacturer of intelligent transport systems: traffic control, parking management, weigh-in-motion and road weather systems. Its parking platforms have typically counted cars with barriers at entrances and exits, or with cameras. That works in managed car parks, but not on open streets, surface lots or residential zones with no barriers and nowhere to mount a camera.
To cover those spaces, CROSS added Fleximodo in-ground NB-IoT sensors from late 2023. The sensors report bay-level occupancy to IoT-HUB, and CROSS pulls the data through the API into its own parking management and variable message sign (VMS) systems. The same configuration was used as the project expanded in phases through 2024.
What was deployed
- IoT Parking Sensor Standard units, in-ground, one per bay
- NB-IoT connectivity over the public cellular network, so no gateways were needed
- IoT-HUB back end, delivering processed occupancy data through the integrations API
- One standard configuration throughout, with no changes between phases
Each sensor pairs a 3-axis magnetometer with radar and compensates automatically for temperature. That keeps readings stable through Czech winters and summers and holds the Standard's rated 99.96% detection accuracy.
Why it matters for intelligent transport systems
ITS providers already own the parts drivers see: signs, apps and control-room dashboards. What they often lack is reliable bay-level data from streets. Fleximodo fills that gap without asking the integrator to rebuild its platform. The sensor handles detection. IoT-HUB handles device management and data processing. The integrator uses the API and keeps its own software on top.
In practice, the same signs that show car park availability from barrier counts can also show on-street availability from in-ground sensors, so guidance covers the whole town, not only managed car parks.
